Breastfeeding more than one child can feel rewarding, but it can also bring some challenges. Whether you are breastfeeding twins, triplets, a baby born early, or children of different ages, it is normal to have questions or find some days harder than others. We can offer support and advice to help you continue breastfeeding in a way that works for you and your children.
Breastfeeding more than one child can include feeding twins, triplets, a premature baby, or both a baby and a toddler, which is known as tandem feeding. Breastfeeding a baby while continuing to breastfeed an older child is called tandem feeding.
It may take time for you and your children to find a feeding routine that works for your family. Each child may feed differently, and you may face some challenges. Speak to a health professional if feeding is difficult or you are worried about how much milk your baby or babies are getting.
Breastfeeding supports your child’s health, growth and development. It can also give comfort and help you build a close relationship with each child. Any amount of breast milk you give is valuable. You can continue breastfeeding after your child’s first birthday for as long as you and your child wish.
