It can be worrying if you feel your child is developing differently from other children. You may have questions about their speech, language, movement, behaviour, learning or understanding. You may have noticed something yourself, or concerns may have been raised during a developmental review. It is normal to have questions and want reassurance.
Children develop at different rates. Some children reach milestones earlier and some reach them later. This does not always mean there is a problem.
Every child develops in their own way. They learn new skills over time, including talking, moving, playing, understanding others and managing their emotions.
Sometimes parents and carers notice that their child is not doing things they would expect for their age. They may seem different from other children, have difficulty communicating, find it hard to learn new skills or behave in ways that cause concern.
Things you notice about your child's speech, communication, movement, behaviour, learning or understanding may be linked to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). SEND is a term used when a child has a learning difficulty or disability that means they need extra support.
You may notice that your child finds it difficult to communicate, understand instructions, learn new skills, concentrate, play with other children or move in the way you would expect for their age. Some children simply need more time, while others may benefit from extra support.
