Getting the Right Support for Your Baby’s Tongue Tie

If you are concerned about your baby's tongue tie, we're here to help you understand the support available. In some situations, your baby may not be suitable for referral to our service, for example if they are receiving specialist care or have certain health conditions. This guide explains when a different referral route may be needed and where to go for further support, so your baby can access the most appropriate care.

Follow these steps

Tongue Tie Exercises

Your healthcare professional may recommend simple tongue tie exercises to help your baby’s tongue move more freely and support feeding. These exercises should only be carried out if they have been demonstrated and recommended by a healthcare professional

Watch the video below for a demonstration of the exercises and guidance on how to perform them safely with your baby.

Please note: The exercises shown in this video may not be suitable for every baby. If you are unsure whether you should be carrying out these exercises, or if you have any concerns about feeding, speak to your healthcare professional for advice.

When a Referral to Our Tongue Tie Service May Not Be Suitable

Most babies with a tongue tie can be assessed through our service. However, there are some situations where a referral may not be appropriate. Your healthcare professional will discuss this with you and explain the most suitable next steps for your baby.

This may include babies who:

  • are older than 14 weeks
  • have complex health conditions
  • are under the care of a paediatrician
  • have cardiac (heart) conditions
  • have a family history of clotting disorders, such as haemophilia
  • have not received an intramuscular (IM) Vitamin K injection or two oral doses of Vitamin K

If your baby is unable to be referred to our service, your GP can arrange an NHS referral to an appropriate hospital service for further assessment and support.

Before Your Appointment

To help ensure your baby can be safely assessed, we ask that routine immunisations are not given, or booked, within 72 hours before or after your baby’s appointment. If you have any questions about this, please speak to your healthcare professional.
